Pendant une courte période en 1984, The Smiths se produisirent pour des programmes musicaux de la BBC sans Morrissey , mais avec la chanteuse popstar des années 60, Sandie Shaw .

Sandie Shaw est surtout connue pour son hit There’s Always Something There To Remind Me, et la chanson de l’Eurovision de 1967, Puppet on a String.

Morrissey et Marr souhaitaient être reconnus professionnellement comme de grands compositeurs comme Burt Bacharach et Hal David qui ont écrit le premier tube de S.Shaw.

Morrissey et Marr adressèrent des lettres à Sandie Shaw pour lui proposer le titre I Do not Owe You Anything  dans l’espoir qu’elle accepte de l’interpréter.

S.Shaw a fini par être séduite par l’éloge de Morrissey dans la presse et par l’intervention du fondateur du label Rough Trade , Geoff Travis .

L’une des chansons que Morrissey envoya à Shaw était le premier single de The Smiths, Hand In Glove.

S.Shaw et les Smiths entreront aux Studios Matrix  de Londres en février 1984, pour enregistrer trois chansons des Smiths avec Johnny Marr, Mike Joyce et Andy Rourke. A l’issu de la session, Hand In Glove fut choisi pour être la face A du 45t et I Do not Owe You You Anything comme face B. Le maxi  sera complété par l’excellent Jeanne.

Si la pochette des Smiths montrait un corps nu,  la version de Sandie Shaw présente une image fixe de Rita Tushingham extraite du film A Taste of Honey – une adaptation de la pièce écrite par Shelagh Delaney ,

Rita Tushingham apparaitra aussi sur les pochettes du single Girlfriend in a Coma et la compilation Louder Than Bombs .

En promotion du single, S. Shaw rejoindra The Smiths en live sur plusieurs programmes télévisés tels que Top Of The Pops où le groupe se produira pieds nus en hommage à S. Shaw qui avait l’habitude de le faire dans les années 60.

Morrissey and Marr’s original letter to Sandie Shaw

Dear Sandie,

We could never begin to emphasize the endless joy we would feel if you would care to listen to our song with a view to possibly covering it.

Obviously the song was written with you in mind. It is an absolute fact that your influence more than any other permeates all our music. Without doubt we are incurable Sandie Shaw fans. Studying all your material, as we do day and night, we felt that your future musical direction must avoid the overt momism trap that most of your 60s contemporaries seized.

We have strong ideas about the musical backing which should accompany your version of ‘I Don’t Owe You Anything’. It should be upbeat and immediate; after all, the audience you left behind was a youthful one – the audience you must seize now must also be youthful. Ken Woodman’s arrangement on such as ‘Keep In Touch’ or ‘You’ve Not Changed’ could easily be electric guitar. But let’s leave the past behind, good as it was. We feel that your future needs an injection of high spirit and vengeance. Should you dislike ‘I Don’t Owe You Anything’ we can supply others with variation. You must surely realize that your name is sufficiently on the lips of young people to demand interest in new, vital product. We would be honoured to provide material for your consideration. The Sandie Shaw legend cannot be over yet – there is more to be done!
